You Can’t Be What You Were
Posted by David Mazure | Filed under Installations, Prints
Here is an installation that currently resides in Brown Hall (the Biology/Geology/Physics Building at ETSU). I installed it last March on the first floor, right near the main entrance to the building (for high visibility). It is made up of 120 circular lenticular prints.
What is a lenticular print you ask? It is a technology in which a plastic, ridged lens is used to produce images with the ability to change or move as the image is viewed from different angles. I have included a close-up detail of one of the prints and a video (just click on the video image to view) to give you a clearer idea of what this looks like in person.

October 6th, 2008 at 8:47 amVery cool!! Sorry we didn’t make it out to your show Friday, but we definitely want to come to your big sha-bang show in the Spring…also, we need a double date soon in honor of the Dave Mazure originals Tj and I are about to acquire! Maybe this weekend? You and Tj figure it out… ;)

October 14th, 2008 at 10:57 amWell, Jessica, you and TJ (and everyone else you may bring) should save the date: February 26th, 2008, because that will most likely be the date of my opening reception for my thesis exhibition! As for the weekend you spoke of, that one has already passed, so I think this weekend would be much better!

Did you make the lenticulars yourself or have to have them made? cool idea. I wish I had one.

October 15th, 2008 at 11:45 amWell, mein freund, why don’t you teleport yourself down to Asheville, NC and I’ll give you one. Unless of course you already have one in your possession because someone forgot to write ‘Do Not Open Till Your Birthday’ on the envelope!
Oh yeah, and I did not make those lenticulars myself. But, this past Friday I did learn how to do it myself (it is very difficult!) -

October 17th, 2008 at 10:55 amI like the walking by video effect… and thanks for the close-up shot. very cool. When you put together a big piece like this, when do you decide that it’s done? How do you stop adding more stringy things between the prints?

October 20th, 2008 at 11:13 amSue: I had a plan of what I wanted it to look like before I put it up – - so I had a very good idea when it was done. Many people were a little confused about the lines in-between the prints. They actually represent the lines in the constellations Cancer and Capricorn (I know, it wasn’t too obvious).
