April Fool’s Day 2008

About a month after installing You Can’t Be What You Were (the previous post) I hung up a scientific research poster in the ‘Student Research Poster of the Month’ spot, which just happened to be right around the corner from my installation. I chose the hang it up on April 1st. After taking a look at the poster, I think you’ll see why I chose that specific date:

October 8th, 2008 at 8:00 amThis illustrates one of my theories, that people are forced to specialize in individual fields of study to be successful. This creates separate vocabularies with which each discipline communicates among themselves but not well with others. Not being able to “crack the code” of another discipline’s language, I suspect that most people assumed that the research poster of the month was simply beyond their scope of knowledge and accepted it as actual research. I wonder how many got the joke?

October 14th, 2008 at 11:03 amWig: Some people actually looked at it and dismissed it as something they couldn’t understand, but could very well be factual nonetheless. Some students did in fact get the joke, other, older professors that took the time to read ‘my research’ were a little offended and quite upset. My goal was to not only ‘play a prank’ on the scientists in the Science Hall, but also as an experiment for myself to combine bullshit art terminology with science terminology and see how they fit together.
You bring up another good point about specialization. Fortunately their are scientists/artist/philosophers out there that are beginning to step away from the specialization of their respective fields to gain a broader perspective, which I think is a great thing which will hopefully lead to a better understanding of our selves and our realities!
